Making Things a Lot Clearer

What is known as laser vision correction is state of the art laser surgery, which is carried out on patients’ eyes so as to correct their vision problems, problems such as farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism.

During this simple surgery a specially trained ophthalmologist will make use of a laser to reshape the eye’s cornea.

  • To be able to undergo such a procedure, the patient must be in good health and have no kind of eye ailments such as cataracts or optic nerve diseases.

When laser vision correction is undertaken, the ophthalmic surgeon will anesthetise the eyes to make the process more comfortable and provide the patient a mild oral sedative if wished for. Whilst the skilled laser surgery is taking place, the patient’s eyelids are gently held open to allow for the surgeon to more easily conduct the operation.

One or Two Eyes at a Time – It’s Up To the Patient

One eye is operated on at a time and the surgery can be performed on both eyes on the same day, should the patient wish so. The first incision carried out is one which works on the surface of the cornea. A circular piece of the cornea is gently folded, after which the doctor uses the laser to remove small amounts of corneal tissue during a process called ablation.

  • The laser work itself is undertaken by a concentrated beam of cool ultraviolet light. This beam is so precise that it can cut into a single strand of human hair without breaking it.
  • Every pulse of this high tech laser is able to remove 39 millionths of an inch (99 millionths of a centimetre) of corneal tissue in 12 billionths of a second.

That’s quite some technology at work there! After the necessary repair work is finished, the folded corneal section is then unfolded and put back into place where tissue was originally removed.

After the simple operation is over and the cornea has been reshaped perfectly, it will then be able to focus light directly onto the retina without any type of distortion, and thus solve vision problems.

Nearly all people notice improved vision not long after surgery, while some others improves over days or weeks.
